Chapter 14

After we returned to Twila's house, our animals safely in tow, I pulled her aside and said, "Why don't you let Granny have free run of your kitchen to cook us up something? We can have a glass of tea on the front porch."

"Want to talk, do you?" she whispered with a sly smile. "Frankly, I think that's a good idea."

A few moments later, Granny was happily busy at her favorite chore, feeding people. Jack had seen through Jess's workshop window and realized his friend was back from the doctor's appointment. He disappeared after promising the two of them would come inside soon for a delayed lunch. Twila and I carried our tea onto the front porch, where we both sat in the swing.

Before I could voice a word of my concern, Twila said, "I know, Alice. How the heck are we gonna find out which one of those sleaze balls who roam the woods shot Bob's daughter? She was the one with her arm in a sling. Daisy."

I took a sip of my tea and nearly spit it out before I realized what it was. Smiling at Twila, I said, "Long Island Tea. Wow. Don't let Granny know that's in the fridge. We might not get any lunch."

"If she put her mind to it, I'll bet Granny could drink both of us under the table. I thought we needed a drink ourselves, and I keep a jar in the back of the fridge. Jess thinks it's one of those flavored teas I like and doesn't bother it." She swallowed a quarter of her glass before she leaned back and pushed her foot on the floor to set the swing swaying. "Now, we need to do one of your mental lists to see what all we've got going on here."

I drank more tea and felt the heat of the vodka, rum, gin and tequila ease my tension. Then I lifted a finger and said, "Let's go by the timeline. Number one is the situation at Mikala's. That's what brought me here in the first place."

"Right," she said, then held up her second finger, which sort of looked like she was getting ready to flip me the bird. "Next is Patches' murder. And I don't care how much you protest that you're not going to get involved in another murder case, we're neck deep already in this one."

I sighed, then added finger three. "Free Eagle. I'll leave Patches' ghost in with number two. Four is trying to help Bob Grassman...." I giggled. "I still have trouble with his name. Anyway, we have to help him find out who shot his daughter."

"There's a five." She stuck her thumb in the air. "Free Eagle's brother."

"And there's lots of a's, b's, and c's under each and every one of those," I added. "Why is Walking Bear causing Mikala trouble, and why can't we make contact with that ghost?"

"Yeah, and why's Patches still hanging around? He wants to talk to Jess, but I just don't see that happening.
